For the first time, the Monteverdi Festival has decided to include in its program a commission for a contemporary opera, resulting from a site-specific production for the church of S. Agostino, dedicated to the figure of the Byzantine monarch and consort of Justinian: Theodora.

Theodora Empress. Opera in Mosaic Form is composed by one of the most performed and awarded Italian composers of his generation, Mauro Montalbetti, with dramaturgy and direction by Barbara Roganti and the superb voice of Roberta Mameli. A title that, thanks to the orchestral contribution of Antonio Greco and his baroque ensemble, Cremona Antiqua, will offer a show that is evocative, with a profoundly contemporary flavor but an ancient soul.

In the dynamics of the Monteverdi Festival 2026, Theodora thus engages in dialogue with the queens Poppea, Dido, and Thetis: Theodora is an impossible experiment; it is the baroque opera that history had not yet been fortunate enough to know.
