Monteverdi is undoubtedly the greatest Maestro of Italy in the seventeenth century. He gave life to the opera with the Orfeo in 1607. Unfortunately, all his subsequent works have been lost, until Il Ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria, written in Venice in 1640. Cavalli, who studied with Monteverdi, would later write some of the most brilliant Venetian operas. Subsequently, Freschi, Sartorio, Ziani, Legrenzi… have continued in the footsteps of Monteverdi and Cavalli in this great tradition of Venetian opera. In this concert a brief history of Venetian opera is outlined, focusing attention on the two operas created by Monteverdi, as well as on some jewels by Ziani, Freschi and Sartorio that have not been performed since the seventeenth century.
