Johann Sebastian Bach’s motets are works of extreme complexity and dense texture: their hypnotizing beauty calls for exceptional virtuosity and sensitivity on the part of performers. The motets featured in this programme are funeral motets, with abundant references to the fleeting nature of life and constant allusions to the farewell of the soul leaving this world. The refined ensemble Vozes del Ayre draws near the works by the Cantor of Leipzig to motets and coral arias by Johann Christoph, a very respected and admired member of the Bach family.
