Description

One of the most stimulating operas of the mid-19th century, Rigoletto initially faced opposition from contemporary censorship due to aesthetic and political reasons. Set in the brilliant world of the Duke of Mantua, an absolute ruler devoid of moral scruples, the opera plunges into the depths of crime. However, the libertine escapes punishment because the angelic maiden Gilda pays for his misdeeds. Commissioned in 1850 by La Fenice, Rigoletto marks Giuseppe Verdi’s mature opera debut and signifies a transition from the ‘usual form’ of aria-cabaletta to more intricate dramatic structures. This new production will see Teatro Fraschini di Pavia leading OperaLombardia, with Alessandro D’Agostini as musical director, following his tremendous success with Madame Butterfly last season, and featuring the staging by the young Italian director and choreographer Matteo Marziano Graziano.
